Santo Nino - Background
If you are in Cebu, do not miss to visit "Santo Nino" in his Cathedral in downtown Cebu and experience the unique atmosphere there. Enjoy and light candles .... and and you can have prayers performed.
It was on Good Friday, 1521, when the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan reached on his world tour Cebu und inquired at King Humabon if they could celebrate the Easter Mass there, what - the Cebuanos have always been very hospitable - was gladly granted.
Humabon and his wife were so impressed by the Spaniards, that they were baptized with 400 of his followers one week later. As a baptismal gift approximately 30 cm high statue of the child Jesus was handed over.
What elsewhere in the seafaring as experienced Spaniard not recognized was that three weeks after Easter the sea goes to low tide in the morning, because - irony of fate - the Spanish wanted the local Datu Lapu Lapu on the neighboring island of Mactan ever show who in the future the "masters" will be in the islands, which they believed to have "discovered" - which was seen as synonymous "conquered".
When the battle seemed despite weapons superiority lost, the Spanish wanted to flee and sail back to Cebu ..... at low tide! Well, they sat on the seabed and so the explorers, made war on the 27th April, a thrashing and Magellan was killed in the fray and the rest of his crew joined the return trip to Spain.
In 1565 again "visitors" came from Spain - this time under the leadership of Miguel de Legazpi, who intended perform the "land grab" and thus subjecting the Cebuanos. The new colony was - later recounted 7,107 islands (at low tide) - named after the Spanish king Philip II, Philippines
Since the Cebuanos from the Spaniards were - a squad from the team Mangellan's remained there already - so enthusiastic not more like a couple of decades ago, so be it partially expressed in open rejection, the conquerors now wanted to make an example and allowed the settlement to burn down.
To make it short ..... in one of the fire ruins it was found - completely undamaged - Santo Nino, which caused the population to the conclusion here probably should have been at work a miracle.
And since then Santo Nino is the national saint and exhibited in the Cathedral - a copy, the original is safely stored in a vault. With great devotion he is revered - especially on Fridays. It held several fairs, attended by numerous believers.
In honor of Santo Nino is celebrated annually in January a Fiesta - with highlight on the 3rd Sunday, which attracts visitors from near and far ..... among them many visitors from all parts of the "Global Village".
